Extensive decay, infection, trauma, crowding or impaction may make it necessary to extract a tooth to relieve your pain or restore your smile.
At your appointment local anaesthetic will be administered to numb the appropriate area. You should not feel any pain, but you will feel a lot of pressure, which is a strange sensation. In some cases, it may be necessary to divide to tooth into smaller pieces, or even to make some carefully planned incisions in the gum. You might have some small dissolving stitches placed to help the hole heal.
After tooth extraction it is important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and to allow the healing process to begin. Biting on a small piece of gauze for 5-10 minutes will help the clot formation, and might need to be repeated later if the bleeding resumes. When the local anaesthetic wears off there should be no pain, but the surrounding area will be tender, so be careful what you eat and drink for the next few days.
Naturally, many patients are anxious about having teeth extracted. However, at Quali-Teeth Dental Care we will do everything to make this treatment as painless and forgettable as possible.
